Awards for Advancing Research in Respiratory Disease (AWARRD)

Boehringer Ingelheim’s Awards for Advancing Research in Respiratory Disease (AWARRD) provides research grants to researchers and practicing veterinarians for applied research related to porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), and in turn, to support the swine industry. Research proposals may be related to swine respiratory diseases such as porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (Mhp), influenza A virus in swine (IAV-S), or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS).

Since the program’s inception more than 15 years ago, research awards totaling more than $1.3 million have supported the development of more cost-effective diagnostic testing and sampling processes, identified more effective biosecurity practices, sought to better understand virus transmission, and helped to develop risk assessment tools, therapeutic intervention programs, and vaccination strategies.

Research award recipients are chosen by an independent group of swine veterinarians and researchers, with financial support provided by Boehringer Ingelheim.
